Yet another tech blog. Yaaay.

The Hardware Symphony

Dorky project combining noise from various old computer bits along with whatever instruments I have lying around (at this moment, an 80’s Yamaha PS-30 keyboard, an OLP MM2 bass, a snare drum pinched from my brother, and a drawer full of kitchen utensils).

My first attempt was going to be bits of Stuck In The Middle With You (the rhythmic muted guitar chord that plays through the verse might be able to be played by the Missile Launcher below, but would probably mean I’d need to transpose everything down to a different key to make it fit).

At this point I think I’ll settle with Bah Bah Black Sheep considering my current level of success. :)

The Non-Standard Instrument Collection

[USB Missile Launcher]
Fig 1. USB Missile Launcher

Bit of an unknown one, this. It only rotates at one speed (very slowly), has four distinct pitches (less than a semi-tone apart, unfortunate; one more-or-less corresponds to C#).

My options:

  1. Pull it apart to see what’s inside. I don’t like my chances of being able to do anything useful with it, though.
  2. Use it as a terribly-overengineered servo to strike or move something (slowly, at a constant speed). Umm.

[Harddisk + Wire]
Sans mucking around with the Missile Launcher, this is the First Thing To Do. Reasonably easy to do, and you end up with some suitably creepy hard-disk speakers.

[Arduino + PC Speaker]
Aw yeah.

[Scanner with red X, greyed out]
Deceased. Gone kaput. Let out the magic smoke.
I’ll see if I can figure a way of directly using the stepper-motor (I honestly can’t tell what’s gone splat; I need to open it up and have a look).
I love the sound of these things. If I can’t make this work again, I just might cry (and get another one from Ebay).
